Adeboye Adegbenro a.k.a. Boye Gbenro
Adeboye Adegbenro Cartoonist, Illustrator, Caricaturist, Storyteller, Animator, musician became a household name in Nigeria and around the world through his pungent political cartoons. He was most famous for his editorial cartoons in the 1980s. His early career as a cartoonist started at Punch Newspaper in 1977. Though influenced greatly by the works of his predecessors like Dele Jegede and Kenny Adamson, he nevertheless created a unique style for himself in the Nigerian cartooning scene.
He left the Punch to Join the National Concord Newspaper in 1980. Adeboye left the shores of the country in 1990 for the United States of America where he furthered his education and graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York with a BFA in Illustration and Cartooning in November 1994. He also have a MFA in art education from Wayne State University. He has been a working artist, painter, animator, illustrator and musician for over 30 years. He has worked as a 2D effects artist at Walt Disney feature animation, Warner Brothers feature animation and Dreamworks SKG feature animation. Adeboye is also a Michigan State certified teacher.
He has worked as art and animation instructor in several schools and colleges in and around Detroit Michigan, which includes Timbuktu Academy of Science and Technology, College for Creative Studies, Baker College in Clinton Township, ITT Technical Institute in Flint Michigan and International Academy of Design & Technology, Troy Michigan. Adeboye was part of the animation crew that worked on the Oscar Award nominated animation 'Mulan", as well as several others which include Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Iron Giant, Osmosis Jones and Eldorado the City of Gold. Adeboye is currently working on his first solo feature 2D animation 'Olurombi' a Yoruba folk tale. Adegbenro over the years also illustrated several books which includes Songs Of An Egghead, a collection of poems by Prof. Tekena Tamuno(1984) University Of Ibadan, Collection of Boye Gbenro Editorial Cartoons Published by Concord Press, Lagos Nigeria (1985), Illustrated Book Cover (May-December Winds and Dorothy, you are not in Kansas anymore)Detroit MI, (2005), Illustrated book cover 'Struck Down, But Not Destroyed' by Reverend Melvin J. McCaster (2008). Adeboye plays saxophone and leads a band known as Odu Afrobeat Orchestra based in Detroit Michigan.
